Changes to the Application Process
06.05.14

We are pleased to report that in 2014, Kalai implemented two significant new changes to our core scholarship program.

As in years past, our primary program is focused on “A-level” students (equivalent to 11th and 12th grade high school students in the U.S.) in the Binga region of Zimbabwe, who are in need of financial assistance to advance their educations.  This spring, however, we expanded the program from only sponsoring students at Binga High to also include students from a nearby regional school called Manjolo Secondary.  In addition, rather than simply offering our need based scholarships on a first come, first served basis, we set a stringent deadline for scholarship applications (which were collected, in person, by Kalai’s Dominic Muntanga), and added a merit based component to the awards process.

As a result of these changes – drawing applicants from a broader base of potential scholars, administering a more efficient application process, and including merit as a consideration in awarding scholarships – we believe we will assemble one of the strongest groups of Kalai scholars yet.
